The weeks after the case closed
January - February 2017
On January 9, 2017, temporary custody was granted to the custodian who had custody of the older child at the time.
Case Plan and Review
As part of the case plan, the parents were required to complete various services, including parenting classes, psychological and mental evaluations, drug tests, counseling, and therapy. During a court review, Judge Kathy Stein asked the mother about her previous childhood abuse, even though the case did not involve sexual abuse. The mother addressed the matter in court.
Addressing the Past
After the mother spoke about her childhood abuse and explained how she had sought counseling as a teenager to address the trauma, a relative left the courtroom and mentioned to the mother that she had allegedly released a family secret—something she hadn’t even known was a secret.
Family Tensions and Misunderstandings
Around January 15, 2017, an aunt (the mother of the person involved in the abuse) called the grandmother of the mother, saying she needed to tell her daughter to stop lying about the past and not to blame her children for what had happened. This call came after the mother had made a social media post which the relative assumed was about her. The relative became upset after reading the post, and the mother also posted about family issues on Facebook, which added to the tension.
